The 2019 Cardinals season came to an end Sunday as they fell to the Reds in the preliminary round of the playoffs, two games to one.
In game one, the Cards got off to a hot start, scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Trey Smith to get off to an early lead. They held the lead for much of the game, as Yahiro threw six strong innings. However, the Reds did not give up and tied the game up in the seventh, and later scored four in the 10th to eventually take the game 7-3.
In game two, facing elimination, Cooper Crompton put the team on his shoulders and threw a great game, going all seven innings without giving up a run. The Cardinals scored two runs on RBI's by Dick and Knight to take the game 2-0 and force a game three Sunday.
Like in game one, game three started with the Cardinals getting an early lead in the first on a single by Trey Smith and a double by Micah Bucknam. However, the Reds would again battle back, taking the lead in the fourth. A home run by Bucknam in the seventh closed the gap, however the Cardinals fell by a score of 7-5 to end their season.
It was a tough way to end the season, however it was a positive year and the future looks bright with many key players returning for another run next year. Be sure to check out the Cardinals Alumni page to see where our seniors are heading in the fall.
